After my master’s degree, I wanted to explore machine learning more deeply. I chose PolyU’s RPg programme because Prof. Xiao-Ming Wu’s research aligns closely with my interests. Her mentorship has been remarkably hands-on and thoughtful. She provided detailed feedback on my writing and helped me polish manuscripts carefully, even on Chinese New Year’s Eve.

With strong funding support from the University, the Faculty, and my supervisor, I was able to attend international conferences in Korea, the United States, Mexico, and Spain. I also completed a six-month research visit at the National University of Singapore through the RSAP programme. Within three years at PolyU, I published over ten first-author papers.

The programme also strengthened my English, especially academic writing. Courses, seminars, and my supervisor’s detailed comments helped me express complex ideas more clearly and confidently. The combination of rigorous guidance and the freedom to explore my own ideas allowed me to grow quickly as an independent researcher and built a solid foundation for my current postdoctoral research.

PolyU offers not only strong academic and funding support, but also an encouraging environment where students are pushed to aim higher while still feeling supported.

My advice is simple: move slowly and steadily, and you will go further in the long run. PolyU provides a highly supportive and enriching environment in which to pursue your PhD.
