Q1. Can I choose which competition / industrial project to join?
Yes, you can join any of our teams based on your interests and strength! We have seen a few year 1 students who are capable enough to manage designing an efficient working module for industrial project!
If you are a freshman without much experience and not sure which team you should go first, we recommend you to join our training workshops to learn the basics of mechanical design, electronics, and programming. Then you may consider joining our MATE ROV or SAUVC competition teams in the 1st year to gain more experience on how the work in a team and build the robots. Later if you are interest in our industrial projects you are free to discuss with the team members to know more!

Q2. What are the requirements of recruitment? Is EEC very demanding on my experiences and skills?
In our teams, we value passion and self-motivation. If you are passionate and self-motivated, you can spend more time learning by doing, which helps you develop your skills and gain experience. To help you kick start, we will provide necessary training workshops for all new members. Whenever you encounter problems, our senior members and instructors are happy to help!
Q3. Can I join EEC if I am not even an Engineering Student?
We do not restrict students selection by their backgrounds, we have Electrical Engineering students working as Mechanical Engineers, Computer Science students in the marketing sub team, and some students contributing to both the mechanical and electronic teams. As long as you are passionate and willing to spend time here, there is no limitation for you!
For the MATE ROV competition we have an entire team for presentation, sponsorship-seeking, marketing display and promotion of EEC. We believe there must be an interesting role for you to contribute and learn!
Q4. Will joining EEC significantly increase my workload and lead to a low GPA?
Knowing that there is no free lunch in the real world, if you want to gain more practical experience, you will have to spend more time out of class hours. However, after joining us, you will know that you are not alone. A lot of our senior members have already gone through the same route as you, we are all happy to share our experiences and knowledge with you, and hence achieving both good academic and competition results! (We have a few members with 1st Honors here~) You can consider participating in our training workshop and mini-competitions to get a taste of how interesting and exciting we are before deciding whether to join us. Don't worry, we don't force anyone to stay or do tasks unwillingly! You can even quit any part of the recruitment process if you wish. We believe that you must be able to enjoy a fulfilling PolyU life in EEC!
Q5.What if I missed the training and interview sessions but I'd still want to join EEC?
Some of our members joined us in the middle of the year, they have proven to be important team members for our Underwater Robotic Team and Industrial Project Team! However, you may have to spend more time to chase after our work schedules and pick up the training knowledge by yourselves with our provided materials. If you are passionate and hardworking, we believe your participation would contribute to our next success in our next competitions!
Q6. How to apply for EEC membership?
All students can apply for 1-year EEC membership until 31st July of the academic year unless specified. E.g. Applying on Sept 2026 will have expiry date in 31st July, 2027.
Below shows how to apply for EEC membership:
- During batch recruitment period (September - October), students can register on the online form for membership and our training workshops events.
- After batch recruitment period (after October), interested students may contact Mr. Cheuk Chi Ming (chiming.cheuk@polyu.edu.hk) for more information.
- EEC membership can be extended in the next year if members continue to participate in any EEC teams such as MATE/SAUVC team or Industrial Project team.
- To maintain effective resources usage, EEC memberships will be reviewed regularly:
- EEC membership will be expired after 2 months of inactivity e.g. students who no longer joining EEC activities or any teams (e.g. MATE / SAUVC team or Industrial Project team) after Mini-ROV competition.
- EEC-in-charge, i.e. Prof. Tam has the final right to update, add or remove individual membership and lab access rights without prior notices.
Q7. What are the benefits with EEC membership?
With EEC membership students can participate in ALL our activities, such as:
- Training Workshops (Mechanical Design, Electronic and Programming, etc.)
- Our Internal Mini-ROV competition.
- Underwater Robotic Competitions:(MATE ROV and SAUVC).
- Industrial Project teams (Generator Inspection Robot and Continuum Robot for Aircraft Tank).
- Other activities such as BBQ and hiking team building activities organized by team members.
Q8. How can I access the lab to work for the team?
Important note: User MUST process EEC membership before applying for lab access rights. i.e. NON-EEC-members cannot apply for lab access.
EEC lab access includes the following locations:
- EF005 (EEC lab)
Note: CF005 belongs to "Innovation and Engineering Hub (IEH)", EEC users shall NOT enter or use any facilities without prior written approval!
Lab access applications require the follow steps:
- Finish the required safety courses and passed the lab safety quiz (EEE Safety Quiz and Laser Safety Quiz)
- Send the pass certificates to technical staffs Mr. Cheuk Chi Ming (chiming.cheuk@polyu.edu.hk) for records.
- Attend the "safety and lab usage training workshop" by technical staff Mr. Cheuk Chi Ming (chiming.cheuk@polyu.edu.hk)
- To ensure ALL lab users are well-understanding the lab safety and usage rules.
- For late-joining new members technical staff will arrange additional training workshops based on requests, at most monthly / bi-monthly.
Q9. How long the lab access will last after successful application?
Lab access rights for ALL members MUST have expiry dates as followed:
- Expiry date = 1 week after Mini-ROV Competition (for tidying and cleaning the lab after the event):
- for newly recruited members who have participated in Mini-ROV competition.
- students may choose NOT to join any teams after Mini-ROV competition, and lab access will expire after that.
- Expiry date = 31st July of the next year:
- for members who have joined MATE / SAUVC team or Industrial Project team.
- EEC-in-charge, i.e. Prof. Tam has the final right to update, add or remove individual membership and lab access rights without prior notices.
