Aims and Characteristics

The programme is concerned with turning large scale data into intelligence through the application of cutting-edge techniques in mathematics, statistics and computer science. It provides students with solid foundation knowledge in data science and hand-on data analytical and programming skills, which will enable them to pursue careers in a broad range of industries, such as information technology, marketing and research, consultancy, healthcare, business retail, urban planning, government and public utilities.

This programme adopts a flexible curriculum which comprised of subjects offered by Department of Applied Mathematics, School of Accounting and Finance, Department of Building and Real Estate, Department of Computing, Department of Health Technology and Informatics, and Department of Land Surveying and Geo-Informatics.  Students can border their data science domain knowledge by choosing elective subjects from a large subject pool offered by the above-mentioned departments.

Admission

An appropriate Associate Degree or a Higher Diploma in Statistics, Information Technology, Engineering, Science or Business or similar qualification from a recognised institution.

The interview aims to evaluate the potential for and interest of applicants in the programme, and test their communication skills and general knowledge relevant to the programme. 

Applicants will be invited to have face-to-face / online interviews, which will be conducted in English.

Curriculum

The below curriculum is reengineered for 2022/23 senior intake cohort. Student must complete all of the General University Requirement (GUR) and Discipline-Specific Requirement (DSR) subjects (comprises Compulsory and Elective subjects) to fulfil the credit requirement for graduation, except those who are given credit transfers due to their prior study.

 

Students who were admitted to 63425 programme in 2021/22 or before should refer to the Programme Requirement Document (63425) for further information.

Recognition and Career Prospect

Upon the completion of programme, graduates with the major in BSc (Hons) in Data Science and Analytics are expected to receive partial exemption from the professional assessment of:

  • Hong Kong Statistical Society
  • Royal Statistical Society of UK

This programme aims to endow students with knowledge and skills that cut across core disciplines of mathematics, statistics and computer science. It focuses on the study of analytical skills based on the three core disciplines and their application on the management and analysis of data, as well as the discovery of lawfulness from very large data systems. Graduates will be able to pursue careers as data analysts in a broad range of industries e.g. IT, retail, urban planning, healthcare, marketing and research, consultancy, government and public utilities.
