What’s Digital Transformation?
Digital transformation is the strategic integration of cutting-edge technologies and connected data across all university areas. It is not simply a series of IT projects. It adopts a “process before technology” approach to ensure stakeholders’ needs and desired outcomes are understood before technology solutions are introduced. By harmonising people, processes, and culture, it drives a systemic shift to advance our transformation goals and deliver sustainable value.
Digital Transformation @ PolyU
DT is a fundamental part of the E4.0 Framework that guides the initiative's design, implementation, and delivery of technologies and process platforms.

DTD is based in IHERD, which is committed to serving as PolyU’s nexus for education transformation. The following use cases illustrate how each element of DT is applied in the PolyU context:
- Serve as the backbone for supporting educational and management models. This includes reviewing relevant policies and guidelines, as well as connecting siloed data and IT systems into a connected platform to support academic and operational needs
Educational Process Optimisation
- Re-engineers processes to improve efficiency and user experience, utilising agile governance to secure stakeholder buy-in and seamlessly build the PolyU E4.0 ecosystem
AI-powered T&L Pedagogy and Curriculum
- Adopt AI to support new paradigms integrating learn to learn, experiential learning and personalised learning
AI-powered T&L Management and Analytics
- Provide teachers with timely insights into student performance, allowing them to offer personalised guidance. They also provide management with the evidence and analysis needed to make data-informed decisions
PolyU Digital Architecture
A unified PolyU Digital Architecture ensures consistency across technology choices and integration by establishing the following principles for interoperability and governance for both new and refactored legacy systems:
- enable loose coupling between software applications through interactions via APIs, and integration following common standards;
- promote reuse of shared functionalities - build repository of shared reusable software modules; and
- reduce duplication, cost, and integration complexity.
All DT projects must be designed and implemented in alignment with the PolyU Digital Architecture, ensuring interoperable, secure, and reusable digital solutions.
