Episode 1: A Lifelong Love of Cantonese Opera

A seeker of challenges ∙ Learning the skills of singing, acting, reciting and acrobatic fighting at age 40.

A legendary diva in the performing arts industry for more than five decades, Dr Liza Wang has been an avid lover of Chinese opera from an early age. In a quest to explore her passion for Chinese opera, Dr Wang voyaged into Cantonese opera at the age of forty. Subsequently elected the Chairperson of the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong (Barwo), Dr Wang has devoted tremendous efforts to the promotion of Cantonese opera in Hong Kong. The Culture Promotion Committee of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University is honoured to present Dr Wang as this year’s Artist-in-Residence, and an exclusive interview with Dr Wang in three episodes. In this episode, Dr Wang talks about her love of Cantonese opera, and the synergy between her rich experiences in the performing arts and Cantonese opera performance.

Episode 2: Between Tradition and Innovation

A trailblazer in Cantonese opera ∙ Instiling new elements into a traditional art form.

A unique treasure of the traditional Lingnan culture, Cantonese opera became the first art form of Hong Kong to be inscribed onto the UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2009. To engage the new generation of audiences, the presentation of traditional performing arts must also keep up with the times. An artist who seeks experimentation and breakthrough, Dr Liza Wang has introduced many innovative elements into Cantonese opera performance, instiling contemporary touches into the traditional art form while preserving the beauty of Cantonese opera.

Episode 3: “I want to see Cantonese opera live on”

A fearless advocate for the Cantonese opera industry ∙ Promoting the preservation and development of Cantonese opera.

As the Chairperson of the Chinese Artists Association of Hong Kong (Barwo), Dr Liza Wong shoulders the mission of advocating the art of Cantonese opera. Over the years, she has strived to expand the reach and development of Cantonese opera, overcoming immense challenges every step along the way. With her remarkable resilience, sense of responsibility and passion for the art form, Dr Wang has paved the way for the rise of a new generation Cantonese opera performers. The veteran artist is devoted to one great cause—she wants to see Cantonese opera live on.
