Summary

Air quality is known to have significant health impacts from both short- and long-term exposure. As a major contributor, it is important that the transport sector works to reduce adverse pollution effects internationally. The impact of rail transportation on air quality at local levels, particularly in enclosed spaces onboard trains is not fully understood. To address this challenge, an effort needs to be done to develop a holistic model to determine how flow around high-speed trains can affect onboard air pollution. In this talk the, the presenter will describe, through the use of full-scale experiments, model-scale experiments and numerical modelling, how the external air flow, exhaust emissions and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) systems interact and impact air quality onboard passenger trains. Thus enabling, through a vigorous scientific approach, the establishment of key factors to improve air quality.
