Biography
Dr Rodney Chu received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from the University of Cambridge, Master of Philosophy degree from The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and Doctor of Philosophy degree from The University of Queensland. He is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Applied Social Sciences of PolyU. He teaches social science subjects related to contemporary issues, with specific reference to Hong Kong and China. Dr Chu is Chairperson of the Department’s Learning and Teaching Committee since 2013, an elected Council Member for six consecutive terms since 2012, and elected Chairman/Vice-Chairman of the PolyU Staff Association since 2013. In 2018, he was the elected general staff representative to serve on the Search Committee for President. He is the appointed Warden of LiSheng Hall of the PolyU Student Halls of Residence since June 2020. He has also been appointed to the Learning & Teaching Committee of the University as a staff member in August 2023.
His educational research focuses on the working of pedagogical design that could facilitate blended learning and flipped classroom. His team’s ongoing work in educational technology has brought them the winning of the QS Reimagine Silver Award in Asia Region (2023), Smart Omnichannel Campus Award as well as the Global Education Award (2024). Currently, the team is developing the Virtual Assistant TIMS (VAT), an AI Chatbot for multidisciplinary subjects in day-to-day teaching that celebrates student-centred learning as well as student-staff partnership.
