Summary
Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Macao sit next to each other at the Pearl River Delta. The three cities share a common cultural history and have formed the unique Xiangshan Culture in modern times, nurturing many significant figures in politics, business, the military and education. Since the beginning of China’s economic reform in the 1980s, Hong Kong has been encouraging foreign investment in Zhongshan and Zhuhai, part of the Pearl River Delta Economic Zone, for joint development and mutual benefit. In recent years, the formation of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area has facilitated the integration of Hong Kong, Zhongshan, Zhuhai, Macao and neighbouring cities to promote coordinated development in the region. In addition to giving a talk, Dr Joseph S P Ting will lead PolyU students and staff on a historical exploration to Zhongshan, Zhuhai and Macao to visit the local museums, places of historical architecture and monuments, and trace the personal histories of well-known figures in the three cities, thus examining the relationship with Hong Kong and deepening our understanding of Hong Kong people’s ancestral home.
