The Division of Artificial Intelligence and the Humanities (AIH) is a constituent academic unit under the Faculty of Humanities at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). Established on 1 January 2026, AIH was formed to advance the strategic development of human-centered artificial intelligence that enriches humanity and society through ethical, creative, and interdisciplinary innovation.
The convergence of AI and the humanities is a rapidly evolving frontier. While AI introduces powerful new tools and methodologies for humanistic inquiry, it also challenges traditional paradigms by offering novel perspectives and prompting questions previously unimagined. As AI is reshaping the humanities, critical questions emerge: how can humanistic scholars effectively harness the transformative potential of AI, and how can the humanities, in turn, inform and advance the development of AI? In response, AIH is committed to leading the integration of AI into education, research, and knowledge transfer within the humanities, with particular emphasis on AI in language innovation, AI in education and communication, NeuroAI, digital humanities, and AI culture and ethics.
The Master of Science in Generative AI and the Humanities programme, launched in 2024 as the first-of-its-kind in Hong Kong and the world, serves as a flagship initiative of the Division. The programme is designed to equip students with a comprehensive understanding of AI’s impact on language, communication, the arts, and culture, and to prepare them for leadership in an AI-driven future.
Through systematic integration of AI and the humanities, AIH aims to bridge disciplinary boundaries, address emerging research and educational priorities, and contribute to institutional and societal capacity-building. By promoting ethical standards, interdisciplinary collaboration, and sustainable innovation, the Division supports the long-term development of AI that is socially responsible, culturally informed, and aligned with human values.
