Examine the possibility to replace pilot monitoring by importing audio to AR glasses using Microsoft HoloLens in Single Pilot Operations

: The main objective of this research project is to develop a device that includes an AR glass with audio response using Microsoft HoloLens to replace Pilot Monitoring (PM) in Single Pilot Operations (SPO). The research objectives are shown as follows: (1)To develop a program for the linkage of the AR glass and the audio response to replace PM in two-crew operation (TCO); (2)To investigate the effectiveness of the model through analyzing including the time to complete the checklist reported by the test device , the dwell time and frequency on instruments in cockpit by using eye tracker and the feedback from the pilots by the questionnaire. To propose the possibility of implementing an AR glass with audio response in SPO to reduce the visual load of the pilots.

Neuroergonomic-based pilots’ performance monitoring under the aid of autopilot

: The core research question of this research is to study how the implementation of auto flight (or autopilot A/P) redistributes the workload for pilots. Therefore, this research aims to evaluate the variation in pilot’s workload and situation awareness with the implementation of autopilot devices. To examine the pilots’ performance, 4 out of 12 human factors issues will be considered, including Stress, Pressure, Situation awareness and Distraction. To quantify the subjects’ performance, glasses-based eye tracker, the NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) questionnaire, and the Situation Awareness Global Assessment Technique (SAGAT) questionnaire will be used.

Examining collaborative decisions between air traffic controllers and pilots in terminal manoeuvring operations

: The main goal of this research project is to model and enhance the shared situational awareness in air traffic control (ATC) environment for both pilots and ATC officers (ATCOs) in air traffic operations and management. The research objectives are shown as follows: (1)To investigate the mental model disconnects between pilots and air traffic controllers on the performance of air traffic operations; (2)To build a linkage between the simulation equipment for facilitating shared situational awareness research in air transport operations; and (3)To propose theoretical and managerial insights to enhance air traffic operation performance from shared situational awareness perspective.

Massive open online course (MOOC) project: Introduction to air transportation and aviation management

: The proposed project targets all learners who are interested in the aviation industry. As the content of the course follows the ICAO standard which is a global standard applied in the aviation industry, it will be suitable for all learners. The MOOC is likely to be an introductory level course for people who are interested in the aviation industry. Therefore, the public who do not have related knowledge of the industry can also join this MOOC. Furthermore, Secondary students who are interested in the BEng (Hons) in Aviation Engineering of PolyU can also join this course to have a brief understanding of the programme and have a clearer picture of the future job market.

Human factors workshop 2021: taking-off from aviation education!

: The purpose of the grant is to make “internationalisation at the home institution”. The goal of this workshop is to let students design their own applications such as an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), pilot, simple air traffic control (ATC), or any activities involving human controllers, and evaluate the brain cognitive performance of the subjects using electroencephalography (EEG). They can also make good use of their work on hand (e.g. FYP, UAV control, flight simulator, small scale flight model from the DBF team, etc.) if human factors analysis is directly applicable to their work. At the end of the workshop, students will need to do a presentation, and the judges will evaluate their work.
