In the age of connectivist learning, knowledge resides in a network. This talk outlines the use of a cloud-based Personal Learning Environment & Network (PLE&N) to support peer-based and lifelong learning. The PLE&N functions as a semi-automatic online forum with updates from a pre-selected set of targeted sources.

Through the use of the PLE&N, teachers, students, graduates and industry practitioners can collaborate, share and engage in a co-learning environment and not be bound by the passing of an academic semester. Together, learners also help to combat information overload.

After 4 years of usage, the PLE&N has been used by over 1,500 PolyU students. Many continue to use it even after they have graduated from the university making it a truly lifelong learning tool.

In 2015, the PLE&N earned PolyU Golden Winner, Region Asia of the Wharton-QS STARS Reimagine Education Award for its innovative pedagogy.

This activity is co-organized by the CoP on Developing, Recognizing and Rewarding Excellent Teaching, the CoP on Using Blackboard LMS to Enhance Learning and Teaching, and EDC.

27/10/2015 Roundtable Teaching and Learning: What can philosophy teach us about teaching (and research)?

Henry C. B. Chan (COMP),
Jack K.C. Chun (GEC),
Haibin Yang (Department of Marketing, CityU)
If you want to fail less, you need to fail more! The quickest way is the longest way! And it is because we are incomplete, we are whole! These and many more reflections of our everyday coping bring us powerful insights to what real knowledge and understanding can do. This is philosophy at its most profound. Come and join us and engage with three world-class educators in how they have consistently used the power of philosophical thinking in their research and teaching and in the process, open up new ways of thinking and doing. In a student-centered classroom, it is important for students to take ownership of their learning and make it meaningful in a way that fits their needs and learning styles. This is much easier said than done. As a teacher, it can be difficult to get out of the way and let students take the reins. Ideally, we must take?on the role of partner, guiding and facilitating learning. One crucial piece of the learning process is reflection, which can take many forms, but most agree that time to reflect is critical for learners of all ages.

The Swivl Robot, Swivl Capture App and?Swivl Cloud?support and make student ownership of learning possible?in the classroom. When students are able to create peer-to-peer instruction videos, review performances and presentations, and see progress over time, video becomes?a powerful tool to support the learning process.

The CoP is now offering two sets of Swivl self-video camera for all PolyU teaching staff on a loan basis. Please write to ask.cop@polyu.edu.hk for more information.

27/5/2015 Roundtable Teaching and Learning: Games we play - fostering more engaged learners Jason Choi (ITC), Doris Chong (RS), Walter Fung (COMP)

It is often believed that “play” is for children and that adult learning needs to be serious!

Yet, we learn best when we are at play. When we engage in play, our senses open up and we feel more at ease whilst simultaneously are still in a state of excitement.
If this is true, we need to incorporate more “serious play” into our classrooms. Join us and engage with three passionate colleagues who have experimented with games and in the process made learning fun and educational for their students.

Roundtable Teaching and Learning: Using our Classroom for Research

Kevin Chan (APSS), Jiang Yuwei (MM), Hennie Yip (EDC)

One of the most counter-intuitive insights in our roles as educators is the hugely untapped opportunity to look at our students as fertile ground for doing research about our own research! The usual thing to do in our classrooms is to teach our students about theories / concepts and how these frameworks help us better understand, explain and anticipate a complex world. But what if we also do the “opposite” and ask our own students about what they think about these theories and research in a way that will provide us with deeper insights about how they are thinking (and not thinking) about them?

Roundtable Teaching and Learning: Teaching Smart People to Learn

David Chan (Avnet Technology Solutions), Georgina Chan (IAEE), Frankie Ng (ITC), Eric Tsui (ISE)

Learning is the key to enlightenment! It is the bedrock of improvement and how to better understand the world.

As we gain more experience and become more knowledgeable, we paradoxically close off to other forms of reasoning and logic becoming even more determined in our own ways.

In such situations, how do we get smart people to learn? This Roundtable Teaching & Learning session brings together a distinguished line of three educators whose everyday job is to deal with exceptionally smart people.

Come join us to hear their lessons learned and success stories in helping smart people learn to unlearn.

Roundtable Teaching and Learning: Why are assumptions important in our teaching, learning & research?

Dr Allan Chan (ITC), Mr Remi Leclerc (SD), Dr Yi Tang (MM), Dr Robert Wright (MM)

It is a word we don’t often think about, although we use it a lot.?
Yet, “assumptions” are powerful drivers of how we think, feel and act!?
Most often we take our assumptions for granted.?
Yet all great scholars (researchers and teachers alike) know the value and importance of (re)examining our current taken for granted assumptions as a way to open up deeper understandings and explanations of why things work and why things don’t work.

Please join us in this engaging and interactive Teaching & Learning Roundtable and hear how three of our accomplished scholars leverage off and challenge the assumptions of their fields to advance what we already know, don’t know and need to know.

Roundtable Teaching and Learning: Researchers Hooked on Teaching and Teachers Hooked on Research

Mr. Orpheus Choy (Managing Director of ONE Concept Group), Ms. Virginia Choi (Managing Director of Tamty McGill Consultants International Ltd) and Mr. David Li (Vice President of Human Resources and Customer Services in New World Telecommunication Ltd.)?

How well are we doing as educators in better preparing our students for a complicated world? Are the core competencies we drill into our students really making an impact in the world of work (albeit during their internships and/or when they enter into full time employment)? What are employers really looking for in our students in making meaningful contributions to their organizations? These are important reflective questions that we must all be constantly asking ourselves as educators. This Roundtable Teaching & Learning session brings together three seasoned executives from industry to share their experiences, insights and advice on what it will take to generate “preferred” graduates, from a “preferred” university offering “preferred” programs. Come and join us for this highly interactive and engaging session and see how we as teachers, researchers and administrators can better prepare our students for the workforce of today (and tomorrow).

One Minute Video:
Educating Tomorrow’s Thought Leaders

On behalf of the CoP on Developing, Recognising and Rewarding Excellent Teaching, Robert Wright (MM), the co-facilitator of this CoP approached more than 30 key stakeholders of the PolyU education system (teachers, researchers, administrators, including business leaders) to answer a burning question on video: “What will it take to educate the next generation of thought-leaders for a complicated world?”?

Their replies have something important to say about our craft as educators. The CoP is confident that the collective thoughts and efforts in this regard will indeed give reason for pause and reflection in making us all better in what educators do.

The CoP would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all interviewees for taking the time to help make this world a better place.
