SHIME

SHIME® stands for “Simulator of Human Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem”, is a unique scientifically validated dynamic model of the complete gastrointestinal tract to study physicochemical, enzymatic, and microbial parameters in the gastrointestinal tract in a controlled in vitro setting. The model consists of 44 pumps with maximum 10 reactor jars which sequentially simulate the stomach (acid conditions), small intestine (digestive processes) and 3 regions of the large intestine, i.e., the ascending, transverse, and descending colon (microbial processes). Careful control of the environmental parameters in these reactors allows to obtain complex and stable microbial communities which are highly similar in both structure and function to the microbial community in different regions of human colon. It can be used to study the metabolic fate of food, microbial and pharmaceuticals compounds over a period of several weeks.
