Enhancing Communication with Students

Strategic Planning Consultation Session for StudentsStrategic Planning Consultation Session for Students

Effective communication with students is always vital for the advancement of PolyU. To prepare for the University’s Strategic Plan, which covers a six-year period from July 2025 to June 2031, a Strategic Planning Consultation Session for Students was held on 15 May 2023 in hybrid mode to solicit opinions from students. Council members were also invited to attend the session as observers.

During the session, President Teng provided students with the background to the process, explained the University’s current positioning and latest achievements, reviewed the implementation of various strategic initiatives over the past few years, and outlined the key strategic goals for the next phase of university development. Thoughtful questions and suggestions were also raised by students, including those about financial support for student programmes and space allocation for student organisations, which are possible issues for further deliberation during later strategic planning stages.

To strengthen the bonds among the PolyU community, President’s Luncheons with Students were held to offer students a platform for informal conversations and exchanges of views with the President. In the academic year 2022/23, three luncheons were held respectively on 20 October 2022, 10 November 2022 and 29 November 2022. Each one targeted different student groups – local students, non-local students and inbound exchange students – to allow the President to gain insights from their varied perspectives.

Communication and mutual understanding between the University and students are top priorities in building an even better PolyU. Therefore, the President’s Sharing Sessions with Students initiative is an important platform for the President and the Central Management Team to share the latest updates and exchange views with students.

In the 2022/23 academic year, three sharing sessions were held respectively on 3 October 2022, 23 November 2022 and 22 March 2023 in hybrid mode, attracting hundreds of students. Starting with President Teng’s presentation on the University’s latest development and achievements, the sessions continued with a speech by Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (Student and Global Affairs), on student support and University’s services. These were followed by a Q&A discussion hosted by Central Management Team members in response to questions raised by participants, major concerns of which include campus access and facilities, non-local student support, study-related issues and hall administration. These fruitful exchanges underpin the University’s governance and students’ sense of belonging.

Dialogue with Vice President (Student and Global Affairs, SGA) is an initiative hosted by Prof. Ben Young, Vice President (SGA), with a view to stepping up communication with our key stakeholders – our students. Prof. Young availed himself of the dialogues to collect students’ views and concerns, while sharing with them the University’s strategic plans as well as its progress and actions in the areas of student development and student support services. In the 2022/23 academic year, a total of six Dialogues with Vice President (SGA) were held to target different student groups, ranging from committee members of student organisations and postgraduate students to non-local students.
