PolyU Financial Assistance Scheme | Student Affairs Office

The Student Affairs Office (SAO) administers a number of bursaries and interest-free loans which are intended to provide additional assistance to local students whose necessary expenses cannot be covered by the government's Tertiary Student Finance Scheme - Publicly-funded Programmes (TSFS) and the Non-means-tested Loan Scheme for Full-time Tertiary Students (NLSFT) and/or their family/personal resources.

Thanks to the unfailing support of our philanthropic donors, we awarded approximately HK$5.59 million in bursaries, grants, and loans to students in need during the 2025/26 academic year. Of this total, around HK$2.77 million in bursaries and HK$370,000 in loans were allocated through the PolyU Financial Assistance Scheme (Main Round).

2025-26 Bursaries and Loan Funds (for reference only)

Eligibility: Local full-time government-funded students with demonstrable financial difficulties.

Primary Funding: Government schemes are the main source of financial support. Students should fully utilize TSFS and/or NLSFT before applying for this Scheme.

Assessment Requirements: Applicants must provide information on their financial assistance application records, family income, and assets.

Assistance may be offered in the form of a bursary (which does not require repayment) and/or an interest-free loan. The level of assistance awarded is based on the applicant's financial need, taking into account the extent to which tuition fees and basic living expenses cannot be met by government assistance and personal or family resources, as well as the availability of funds.

In 2025/26, 302 out of 316 applications (96%) under the PolyU Financial Assistance Scheme (Main Round) were approved. Bursary awards generally ranged from HK$3,000 to HK$10,000, while loan amounts generally ranged from HK$10,000 to HK$20,000.

An annual centralised application exercise is in use to process application for financial assistance under the PolyU Financial Assistance Scheme (Main Round). Application period is normally in the commencement of an academic year.

Applications will be paper-vetted in the first instance. If necessary, applicants will be required to submit further information and/or invited to attend an interview for clarification and assessment.
