(18 May 2013) PolyU Signed the Food Wise Charter

On 18 May 2013, the HKSAR Government officially held a launch ceremony for the Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign to promote food waste reduction at Olympian City 2 in West Kowloon. The ceremony was officiated by Mrs Carrie Lam, the Chief Secretary for Administration and Mr Wong Kam-sing, the Secretary for the Environment also addressed at the ceremony. More than 250 representatives from various sectors showed their support for the Campaign.

The Food Wise Hong Kong Campaign is one of the signature events under the theme of "Fresh Hong Kong" of the "Hong Kong: Our Home" Campaign, aims to promote public awareness of the food waste problem in Hong Kong and instill behavioural changes in various sectors of the community with a view to reducing food waste generation.

To echo this campaign, the Food Wise Hong Kong Steering Committee (FWHKSC) chaired by the Secretary for the Environment has built the “Food Waste Charter”. According to the Government’s press release on 18 May 2013, Up to now, over 150 organisations from various trades have committed to be the Food Wise Partners and PolyU is one them. Prof. Timothy W. Tong signed the Food Wise Charter on 3 May 2013.

PolyU is committed to promoting best practices and behavioral changes to reduce food waste; drawing up and implementing plans; conducting in-house waste audit; adopting and promoting recipes which make use of leftovers; and supporting food donation activities.
