From Research Center to Unique Institute
The Sichuan 8-magnitude earthquake occurred in 2008 brought about huge human and economic losses. The two universities took immediate action in June, 2008 by jointly established the "SCU-PolyU Sichuan Post-Disaster Reconstruction Support and Research Center" with the support from the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Civil Affairs and the Sichuan Provincial Government. The collaboration served as a sound foundation for the establishment of IDMR.
Situated at the beautiful Jian An campus of Sichuan University, IDMR was officially open in 2013. The Institute is first of its kind on ”disaster preparedness, disaster risk reduction and disaster reconstruction” on Chinese Mainland. It covers an area of 20,000 square meters, compassing 6 laboratories and 1 resource center. The establishment of IDMR was supported by the generous donation from the Hong Kong Jockey Club.
Since its establishment, the institute has developed joint PhD programme leading to dual awards, 4 master programmes, undergraduate service learning programmes to nurture top-notch talents targeting at disaster prevention, disaster reduction and major crises management.
1. Joint PhD students: Admitted 42 in the domains of disaster nursing, rehabilitation sciences, social work, prosthetic and orthotics, construction and environment
2. Master Programmes: Offered 4 professional taught postgraduate programmes: MSc Disaster Nursing, MSc Prosthetic and Orthotics, Master of Physical Therapy (China), Master of Occupational Therapy (China).
3. Ug service learning programmes: Offered 10 subjects in the areas of occupational therapy, prosthetic and orthotics.
With relevant expertise and experiences, the Institute actively involved in supporting the reconstruction of post-quake areas in Ya’an of Sichuan and Ludian in Yunnan. For instance, the teachers and students of the first and second cohort of MSc Disaster Nursing programme organized professional trainings in Yunnan to support the patients and local nurses.
Student Enrichment Programmes
PolyU and Sichuan university has organized various service learning subjects, general education subjects and short term cultural study tours to the undergraduate students. Though service learning, student has the opportunities to apply their knowledge learnt in classrooms to help local people in need in various parts of Sichuan, including post-disaster areas. Each year, there are more than 100 students joined the student activities to Sichuan. In 12 May 2016, the two universities established a Service Learning Base in Sichuan to cultivate a spirit of serving people affected by disasters.
Looking forward, IDMR will continue to serve the nation and international by nurturing top-notch talents, undertaking impactful research, fostering academic development and innovations to enhance capacity and services in disaster prevention and reduction, minimizing disaster-prone economic and human losses for sustainable development of the society.
