His pioneering research and development on application-oriented ultrasound has led to a series of technological inventions. Two innovations have been successfully commercialized by startup companies he co-founded, including Scolioscan, a 3D ultrasound imaging device to provide radiation-free assessment of scoliosis, and Liverscan, a palm-sized ultrasound device for fatty liver and liver fibrosis assessment. Scolioscan has already been registered as a medical device and installed in multiple countries for clinical applications. The startup company for Scolioscan has attracted over HK$100M investment up to now. Professor Zheng’s inventions have won numerous international and local awards, including the prestigious 1st Bank of China Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Prize (category of Life and Health) in 2022.
He is a Fellow of the HKIE, a Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics (IEEE), and has held positions such as Secretary of the World Association of Chinese Biomedical Engineers (2017-2019) and Chair of the Biomedical Engineering Division of HKIE. He is also an Honorary Advisor for the Hong Kong Federation of Senior Citizen Industries and the Hong Kong Medical and Healthcare Device Industries Association, as well as President of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Chapter of the International Society of Gerontechnology. Prof Zheng’s dream is to make more useful medical devices to serve people in need, particularly children and elderly people.
