Outstanding PolyU Alumni Award 2001

Seven outstanding alumni of The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have been selected for the University's "Outstanding Alumni Award" in recognition of their illustrious professional accomplishments and tremendous contributions to their alma mater and the community.

The awardees (in alphabetical order) are:

Dr Chang Chu-cheng, Group Chairman of Varitronix International Ltd.
Mr Daniel Lai Sik-cheung, Head of Information Technology of MTR Corporation Ltd.
Mr Lam Tai-fai, Managing Director of Peninsula Knitters Ltd.
Mr Freeman Lau Siu-hong, Partner and Chief Art Director, Kan & Lau Design Consultants
Mr Kenneth Pang Tsan-wing, Commissioner of Rating and Valuation of the HKSAR Government
Mr Thomas Tang Koon-yiu, Executive Director of the Hong Kong Productivity Council
Prof. Tsoi Ah-chung, Pro Vice Chancellor (Information Technology), University of Wollongong, Australia.

 Brief Biography of the awardees:

Dr Chang Chu-cheng
(Higher Diploma in Electrical Engineering, Hong Kong Technical College, 1964)

Dr Chang co-founded Varitronix, a world-famous manufacturer of Liquid Crystal Displays (LCD). The superconductive electronics expert has contributed substantially to Hong Kong¡¯s electronics industries and the nurturing of local technical talents.

Mr Daniel Lai Sik-cheung
(Certificate in Supervisory Management, Hong Kong Technical College, 1972; and Diploma in Management Studies, Hong Kong Polytechnic, 1975)

Mr Lai has trained many IT professionals and is President of the Hong Kong Computer Society. He has helped introduce image processing and object orientation technologies to Hong Kong and promoted public awareness of IT applications.

Mr Lam Tai-fai
(Higher Diploma in Textile Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic, 1981)

The industrialist has expanded the manufacturing and wholesaling business of Peninsula Knitters and acquired a good name for its products in the US. He fervently supports various social, sports, educational and charitable activities in Hong Kong and the mainland.

Mr Freeman Lau Siu-hong
(Diploma in Design, Hong Kong Polytechnic, 1979)

A celebrated, prolific designer who has won more than 200 awards in local and overseas art and design contests, Mr Lau has helped enhance the international standing of Hong Kong¡¯s design profession and cultivate local creative talents.

Mr Kenneth Pang Tsan-wing
(Higher Diploma in Surveying & Building Technology, Hong Kong Technical College, 1967)

The surveyor was formerly head of the Land Registry when it was established as Hong Kong¡¯s first trading fund government department. In his later posting as the Hong Kong Commissioner for Economic and Trade Affairs in the US, he helped safeguard the interests of Hong Kong during the pre- and post-1997 handover period.

Mr Thomas Tang Koon-yiu
(Higher Diploma in Production Engineering, Hong Kong Technical College, 1968)

Mr Tang has pioneered in Hong Kong, among others, the production of magnetic heads, powder metallurgy and printer heads and mechanisms. He is spearheading Hong Kong¡¯s move to become a centre of innovation and technology.

Prof. Tsoi Ah-chung
(Higher Diploma in Production Engineering, Hong Kong Technical College, 1968)

 Prof. Tsoi is a top pioneering scholar and researcher in the area of Neural Network Theory, now residing in Australia. His research achievements lie mainly in the practical application of artificial intelligence, including neural network technique.
