Workshop Title: “Material Matters

“Material Matters” is a one day workshop that provides students with an opportunity to explore designing through making. As our lives become increasingly digital and we have access to ever more complex technologies and tools, this workshop takes students back to basics through an exploration of physical materials and production processes.

Composed as a series of fast, experimental, and thought provoking model making activities, the workshop introduces students to an array of simple yet powerful methods for exploring, producing and communicating design ideas. As the day progresses, these activities will allow students to develop personal design propositions and related physical prototypes which they can take away at the culmination of the session.

The workshop’s physical making experiments will also be complimented by discussions relating to sustainability and the important role that materials play in reducing our impact on the planet. As we become increasingly aware of the resources we use and the waste we produce, how might good design help us to solve one some of the most pressing issues of our time?
