Introduction to Language Science
Non-credit-bearing
This subject aims to introduce students to the discipline which studies language scientifically and to raise their awareness about the unique features of language and the various real-world applications of language science.
This subject is to stimulate students’ interest in exploring the uniqueness of human language and to inform them of the interdisciplinary nature of language science and its significant contributions.

Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:

  • Appreciate the scientific aim of describing and understanding language;
  • Understand the core aspects of language;
  • Make informed judgments concerning topics related to language;
  • Identify the real-world applications and significance of language science.

  • In-class quizzes (20%)
  • Take-home assignments (60%)

(All quizzes, assignments and attendance will contribute to the final grade, and students are strongly advised to attend all classes.)
