Living in an Ageing World: Opportunities in Our Shared Future

This one-credit subject introduces students to key issues in a rapidly ageing world, encouraging them to reflect on the relevance of these topics to their personal development and future careers. Through lectures, course activities and intergenerational interactions with older adults, students from multiple disciplines will gain real-world exposure and mutual understanding, fostering empathy and awareness of the challenges and opportunities in an ageing society.
The objective of the subject is to prepare students for an ageing society by understanding demographic changes and their impacts, fostering meaningful interactions with older individuals, and exploring opportunities in ageing-related industries and careers.

Upon completion of the subject, students will be able to:

  • Explain population ageing and how demographic changes influence individuals, families, and societies.
  • Develop a holistic understanding of ageing as a biological, psychological, and social process.
  • Demonstrate empathy, age-inclusiveness, and problem-solving skills in addressing ageing-related challenges.
  • Identify opportunities and innovative solutions in ageing societies, including in healthcare, social policy, gerontechnology, and the silver economy.
