The State Key Laboratory of Climate Resilience for Coastal Cities (SKL-CRCC) is proud to announce that Prof. Wei MA, Member of our laboratory and Associate Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE), has been awarded approximately HK$7.6 million in funding from the 26th batch of the Hong Kong Government's Smart Traffic Fund for a 24-month research project. Led by Prof. MA, the project is titled "Development of Vision-Language Model-based Lane-Level Digital Map Modelling Technology for Establishing Lane-Level Road Network Digital Maps". It aims to apply vision-language models and artificial intelligence to develop innovative modeling technologies for generating lane-level road network digital maps. By integrating multi-source geospatial and road data—including street-view imagery, aerial/satellite imagery, government datasets, and open-source maps—and coordinating specialized AI agents for data interpretation, lane-feature extraction, and topology modeling, the platform will create accurate, machine-readable digital maps featuring precise lane-level characteristics, traffic flow directions, and network connectivity for Hong Kong. The Smart Traffic Fund provides critical financial support to local organizations for research and innovation aimed at enhancing commuting convenience, boosting road network efficiency, and improving driving safety. PolyU has now secured support for 35 projects under the fund, underscoring the University's leading role in advancing transportation technology innovation. We extend our warmest congratulations to Prof. MA on this remarkable achievement and look forward to his continued contributions to smart urban mobility!
