Prof. Yi-Qing NI, Chair Professor of CEE and a core member of State Key Laboratory of Climate Resilience for Coastal Cities (SKL-CRCC), has been named among the 40 recipients of the 16th Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award (第十六屆光華工程科技獎). This prestigious national honour once again affirms Prof. Ni’s outstanding contributions to the field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM), and the SKL-CRCC community takes immense pride in his achievement.
Administered by the Chinese Academy of Engineering, the Guanghua Engineering Science and Technology Award is widely regarded as one of the highest honours in China’s engineering and technology sector, recognising experts and scholars who have made exceptional accomplishments in engineering science, technology, and management. Prof. NI is one of only 40 distinguished researchers to receive the award this year — a truly well-deserved recognition.
With over three decades of dedication to SHM research, Prof. NI has pioneered an integrated modular design approach for large-scale structural health monitoring systems and a life-cycle monitoring paradigm. His work has been widely applied to major civil engineering structures, significantly enhancing infrastructure safety and resilience. His research also provides strong support for the Laboratory’s strategic directions in urban disaster resilience and structural reliability under complex environments.
Prof. NI’s scholarly achievements and academic standing are widely acknowledged. He has been honoured with the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (國家科技進步二等獎), the First Prize of the Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award (廣東省科技進步一等獎), and multiple Gold Medals with Special Recognition at the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva. He was also named ‘Person of the Year’ by the International Journal of Structural Health Monitoring. In the 2025 ScholarGPS global ranking of top scholars, Prof. Ni was recognised in the ‘Lifetime Achievement’ category, placing him among the top 0.05% worldwide, and ranked fourth globally in the field of Structural Health Monitoring.
