ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Prof Haiyan Song was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award in Tourism Research at the ICOT2025 Annual Conference in Dubrovnik, Croatia on 25-28 June.
At the same conference, Prof Richard Qiu received the 2nd Prize in the Best Paper Awards for his co-authored paper entitled "Tourism Market Segment Formation Through Individual Social Interactions: A Discrete Choice Perspective".
Dr Wendy Wang, Prof Ying Wang and Prof Nan Chen won the Best Paper Presentation Award for their co-authored paper entitled "Unlocking Hong Kong's Tourism Potential in Key Belt and Road Countries within ASEAN – A Multimodal Data-Driven Approach to Market Intelligence" at the 3rd One Belt One Road One Tourism Conference in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 24-27 June 2025.
Prof Nan Chen and Prof Cathy Hsu received the Article of the Year Award at the 2025 ICHRIE Global Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA on 18-20 June for their paper on "Family Tourist Emotional Experience: Emotion-Generative and Regulatory Process", published in the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Research in 2024.
Colleagues at the SHTM have been ranked amongst the world's top tourism scholars by ScholarGPS. At the institutional level, the School was also ranked number 1 worldwide for both Academic Institution (Lifetime) and Academic Institution (Last Five Years) in the tourism field. Five faculty members, including Dean Kaye Chon, Prof Haiyan Song, Prof Cathy Hsu, Prof Sam Kim and Prof Honggen Xiao, have been ranked among the top 100 scholars globally throughout their careers.
The Club Managers' Association (CMA) SHTM Student Chapter received the Student Club of the Year Award 2024/25. The SHTM makes this award annually in recognition of the School's student club that has demonstrated exceptional commitment to the student body and outstanding achievements. The CMA is committed to offering student members a well-rounded set of experiences to increase their interest in the private club industry, boost their industry awareness and prepare them for career success.


SHTM Ph.D. students excelled at the SHTM Three Minute Thesis® (3MT) Competition held on 6 June 2025, in which they were tasked with presenting their research in just three minutes. Daffne Qiu was crowned Champion, while Amare Yaekob Chiriko and Runki Zou were awarded First Runner-Up and Second Runner-Up, respectively. Daffne also received the People's Choice Award at the Faculty/School-level competition.

Representing the School at the university-wide PolyU 3MT Competition on 2 July, Daffne achieved further distinction by winning the First Runner-Up Award.
Prof Deniz Kucukusta was elected Vice President of APacCHIRE in June 2025.
Jade Jiang, a Year 2 student in the BSc in Hotel and Tourism Management programme with a Secondary Major in AIDA, Sara Zhang, a Year 2 student in the BSc in Hotel and Tourism Management (Event and Experience Management) programme and Prof Daniel Leung received the Best Paper Award for their co-authored paper entitled "The Interactive Influence of Visual Perspective and Visual Content on Restaurant Diners' Processing and Response to User-Generated Videos" at the 16th APacCHRIE Youth Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 28-29 May 2025.
Ph.D. students Yannie Wan and Jinny Zhang, Dr Fanny Manner Baldeon, 2022 Ph.D. graduate, and Prof Mimi Li received the First Runner-Up Award for their co-authored paper entitled "Balancing Stress and Leisure: Mothers' Experiences in Three-generational Family Travel" at the 23rd APacCHRIE Conference in Chiang Mai, Thailand on 27-30 May 2025.
At the same conference, Prof Hailey Shin received the Best Paper for Industry Practice for her co-authored paper entitled "Is AI a Friend or Foe to Hospitality Employees? Employees' Perceived Fear of Their Job Insecurity".
