Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Qu Xiao, Dr Ksenia Kirillova and Ph.D. students Mr Mohammad Islam, Mr Fuad Mehraliyev, Ms Lucy Liu, Ms Shirley Zhang and Ms Lorraine Zhang attended the 24th Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Houston, USA on 3-5 January 2019.
  • Professor Chon delivered opening remarks and participated in a panel session entitled "Top 3 Do's and Don'ts".
  • Dr Xiao and Ms Lorraine Zhang presented a co-authored paper entitled "What Drives the International Acquisition of Firms from Emerging Economies? Evidence from Chinese Lodging Firms".
  • Dr Kirillova participated in a panel session entitled "Transitioning from a PhD Student to a Faculty Member".
  • Mr Islam and Dr Kirillova presented two co-authored papers entitled "Nonverbal Communication in Hospitality: At the Intersection of Gender and Religion" and "Nonverbal Communication in Hotels: A New Way to Conceptualize Co-Creation of Experiences".
  • Mr Mehraliyev presented two co-authored papers entitled "What Affects Tourists' Use of Social Media in Travel Decision?" and "Expert Power of Social Media Platforms: Examining the Effects of Experience and Specialization".
  • Ms Liu presented a co-authored paper entitled "Conceptual Framework for Robot Adoption by Hotels".
  • Ms Shirley Zhang presented a co-authored paper entitled "Educating Visitors: Experiential Learning on Greenways".

Dr Anne Tang, Ms Tiffany Cheng and Mr Raymond Kwong presented a co-authored paper entitled "Applying Self-determination Theory to Exploring Students' Perception towards Learning Modes of Service-Learning" at the 3rd International Conference on Service-Learning in Hong Kong on 10-12 January 2019.
Dr Sabrina Huang presented a paper entitled "Postmaterial Values and Career Aspirations of Gen-Y Tourism Professionals and Their Attitude towards Tourism Development" at the 2019 International Conference on Business, Information, Tourism and Economics in Sapporo, Japan on 19-21 January.
Dr Markus Schuckert spoke on the topic "Global Grant Applications" in a Ph.D. workshop at the 26th Annual eTourism Conference (ENTER 2019) in Nicosia, Cyprus from 29 January to 1 February.
Professor Haiyan Song, Professor Bob McKercher, Professor Rob Law, Dr Denis Tolkach and Dr Vincent Tung attended the 29th Annual Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education Conference in Cairns, Australia on 11-14 February 2019. In the editors' panel session, Professor Song and Professor Law shared their tips on ways of getting published in top international journals. Professor Song also presented a co-authored paper entitled "The Spillover Effect of Accommodation Sharing Services on Neighbouring Tourist Attractions". Professor McKercher and Dr Tung presented a co-authored paper entitled "Do National Cultural Values Differ by Destination Choice?" Professor Law presented a co-authored paper entitled "Measuring Hotel Website Quality and Its Impact on Consumers' Attitudinal and Behavioural Responses: A Formative Measurement Approach". Dr Tolkach presented three co-authored papers entitled "Globalisation and Cultural Change in Selected Pacific Island Countries: Role of Tourism", "Travel Professors: A YouTube Channel about Tourism Education & Research" and "Stupid Tourism". Dr Tung presented a co-authored paper entitled "Assessing Tourist Stereotypes: Implicit and Explicit Approach".
Professor Kaye Chon was invited to participate in a panel session on the topic "Which Tourism Graduates Will the Tourism Industry Need in 2020?" at the ITB Young Professionals Day in Berlin, Germany on 6 March 2019.
On 19 March, five cheese-tasting sessions were held at the SHTM for students and other Food and Wine Academy participants. The sessions were supported by the US Consulate General Hong Kong and Macau, Agricultural Trade Office Hong Kong, and the US Dairy Export Council.
