ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Hotel ICON, the SHTM's fully integrated teaching and research hotel, placed among the top 25 hotels in Asia in the 2019 TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice award. Based on the reviews and opinions of millions of travellers, Hotel ICON is in the top 1% of hotels in Asia.
Miss Amanda Wantono, a final-year student in the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, received the Outstanding Student Award, School of Hotel and Tourism Management 2018 at PolyU's Outstanding Student Awards Presentation Ceremony on 21 February 2019. The prestigious award was presented to Miss Wantono by Professor Philip Chan, PolyU Interim President and Deputy President and Provost. Outstanding Student Awards are granted annually to full-time final-year students who excel in both academic and non-academic pursuits during their studies. The awardees are presented with prizes and their names are inscribed on a plaque on the PolyU campus.
Four SHTM faculty and staff members, including Professor Bob McKercher, Dr Norman Au, Dr Alan Wong and Ms Elly Shek, were honoured by PolyU with Long Service Awards on 22 February 2019 in appreciation of their loyal and dedicated service to the institution over the years.
Dr Ksenia Kirillova received the "Most Active New Consultant" award at PolyU's Outstanding Professional Services Awards Presentation Ceremony 2018 on 4 March 2019 in recognition of her contribution to consultancy work.
A team of SHTM students who are also Institute of Hospitality (IoH) members, including Miss Tanika Gambhir and Miss Amanda Wantono, both final-year students in the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, and Mr Thibault Druesne, an MSc student in the International Hospitality Management programme, won the "Passion4Hospitality" debate competition in London organised by the IoH on 11 March 2019. The topic this year was "Will AI and robots take away hospitality jobs or make life easier for both employees and customers?"
