ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
Led by SHTM Adjunct Assistant Professor Dr Ivy Chow and Instructor Mr Joey Wu, students in the Attractions and Visitor Management class took on the "Designing an onsite attraction for Ocean Park Halloween Fest" project. Following a guest lecture by Ms Vicky Wong, Events Manager at Ocean Park, and a tour of the relevant facilities at Halloween 2017, the students presented group proposals, with four selected as the best. The winners received their prizes of admission tickets to Ocean Park at a presentation ceremony held on 8 February.
Dr Honggen Xiao received the 2017 Ministry of Culture and Tourism - Excellent Research Article Second Award for his co-authored paper entitled "Tacit Knowledge Spill-over and Sustainability in Destination Development" from the China Tourism Academy in April 2018.
Ms Vicky Leung Tsui-yan, a research student in the Ph.D. in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, was announced winner of the "Make Your Panino" competition held at the School's Western Food Production Lab on 10 April 2018. Ms Leung represented the School and travelled with Chef Gianni Caprioli, the brand Ambassador of Rovagnati in Asia, to attend the global final of the competition in Milan, Italy in late May 2018.
Miss Kwan-lam Ma, a Year 3 student in the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, was placed first in the Hotel Brand Name and Logo Design Competition, with her design, Auguest Hotel Hong Kong. An award ceremony was held at the School on 16 April 2018.
Ms Irene Chan Cheng-chu and Ms Thanakarn Bella Vongvisitsin, research students in the Ph.D. in Hotel and Tourism Management programme, received Santander Universities Awards based on their research papers entitled "Does One Size Fit All? Investigating the Effect of Personalized Hotel Websites" and "Developing Thematic Tourism Routes through Transnational Cooperation: The Case of IMT-GT Liveable Old Towns" respectively. The awards will financially support them in attending the Doctoral College Conference in Guildford, UK, on 3-4 July 2018.
Ms Thanakarn Bella Vongvisitsin, a research student in the Ph.D. in Hotel and Tourism Management programme received the PATA/IGLTA Foundation Sponsorship to attend the International Gay & Lesbian Travel Association's 35th Annual Global Convention in Toronto, Canada on 9-12 May 2018.
Professor Haiyan Song received Best Paper Award based on his co-authored paper entitled "Effects of Terrorist Attacks on Tourist Flows to France: Is Wine Tourism a Substitute?" at the 2nd Wine and Hospitality Management Workshop in Lausanne, Switzerland on 14-15 May 2018.
Mr Gerald Chen Cheuk-chun and Miss Scarlet Wong Yat-lam, two of the Kwok Scholars and Year 2 students in the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, attended the Roundtable and Annual Dinner hosted by the Founder of Kwok Scholars Association Dr Walter Kwok on 16 May 2018. Gerald and Scarlet have been awarded Kwok Scholarships to take hospitality related courses at the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration for one semester.
