Dr Alan Wong presented a paper entitled "Ecotourism, Community-Based Tourism (CBT), Poverty Alleviation and Service Learning" at the 11th China Ecotourism Development Forum in Hainan, China on 17-18 December 2016.
Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Honggen Xiao, Dr Dan Wang, Dr Peter Kim, Ms Forest Ma and D.HTM student Mr Alex Hsu attended the 22nd Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Houston, USA on 5-7 January 2017. Dr Xiao presented a poster entitled "Modelling Small Hospitality Business Growth: Evidence from Zhejiang, China". Mr Hsu presented a co-authored paper entitled "Technology‐Enabled Innovations towards a Disrupted Inbound Tourism Sector: Evidence from Taiwan".
Dr Sam Kim and Dr Qu Xiao attended the STPBI Forum on the Future of Hospitality and Tourism and the Asia-Pacific CHRIE Board Meeting in Bali, Indonesia on 13-14 January 2017.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a lecture entitled "Opportunity and Challenges in Asia's Hospitality and Tourism Industry" to the undergraduate students from EWHA Womans University in Seoul, Korea on 24 January 2017.

A number of SHTM staff members and students, including Professor Haiyan Song, Professor Rob Law, Professor Hanqin Qiu, Dr Norman Au, Dr Basak Denizci Guillet, Dr Kam Hung, Dr Deniz Kucukusta, Dr Markus Schuckert, Ph.D. student Ms Sunny Sun and D.HTM student Mr Alex Hsu attended the 24th Annual ENTER Conference in Rome, Italy on 24-26 January 2017. Professor Song participated in a panel session on "Validity/Reliability Issues in Big Data" and presented a co-authored paper entitled "A Preliminary Analysis of Relationships between Traveller Characteristics and Hotel Review Ratings". Professor Law presented a co-authored paper entitled "Reviewing Geotagging Research in Tourism". Professor Qiu presented a co-authored paper entitled "MOOCs in Tourism and Hospitality Domain". Dr Au presented a co-authored paper on "Managerial Response Strategy to Online Customer Compliments: A Comparative Analysis of Indigenous-owned and International Brand Hotels in China". Dr Denizci Guillet, Dr Kucukusta and Dr Schuckert presented a co-authored paper entitled "From Information Technology to Mobile Information Technology: Applications in Hospitality and Tourism". Ms Sun presented a co-authored paper entitled "Channels for Search Hotel and Travel Information". Mr Hsu presented a co-authored paper on "Entrepreneurship in the Contemporary Tourism Ecosystem: The Case of Incoming Tour Operators in Taiwan".

Dr Qu Xiao attended the International CHRIE Board Meeting in Baltimore, USA on 27-28 January 2017.
Dr Murray Mackenzie and Mr Ryan Smith conducted a training programme entitled "SMART Practices in Restaurant Business" for 230 participants from the hotel, restaurant, airline and hotel management sectors in Nepal. Over two training days in Kathmandu on 30-31 January 2017, and one day in Pokhara on 2 February, the programme covered topics including strategic menu design, restaurant technology, food and wine pairing, wine selling and marketing, and maximising restaurant revenue, among others.
Professor Brian King, Professor Bob Mckercher, Dr Chloe Lau, Dr Markus Schuckert and Dr Derrick Lee attended the 27th Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) Annual Conference in Dunedin, New Zealand on 7-10 February 2017. Professor King delivered a keynote on "The Transformation of the Asia-Pacific Integrated Resort: Long March 2.0". Professor Mckercher presented a co-authored paper entitled "Travel by Expats in Hong Kong and Macau". Dr Lau presented a co-authored paper entitled "Getting Ready for the Chinese Wave: Exploring the Tourism Social Sustainability in Pacific Sids". Dr Schuckert presented a co-authored paper entitled "Still Happy Here? How Chinese Tourists Perceive the Service in Hong Kong". Dr Lee presented a co-authored paper entitled "Impact of Integrated Resorts on Residents' Well-Being: A Case of Singapore".

Dr Barry Mak attended the Hamburg Aviation Conference 2017 in Hamburg, Germany on 8-9 February.
Professor Haiyan Song was invited to serve as a panellist in a roundtable on "Tourism as a Driver for Territorial Economic Development" at the 1st UNWTO World Conference on Smart Destinations in Murcia, Spain on 15-17 February 2017.
Professor Brian King was an on-site evaluator at the World Travel & Tourism Council Tourism for Tomorrow Awards held recently. During the evaluation process in Shanghai and Hefei on 6-8 March 2017, he met the J. Willard and Alice S. Marriott Foundation's China Hospitality Education Initiative (CHEI) team members, Marriott Parkview hotel leaders and associates, Marriott International leaders, CHEI industry guest speaker, teachers and administrators from the Anhui Zhong-ao Institute of Technology and CHEI partner schools in Anhui province.
