ACHIEVEMENTS AND RECOGNITION
The Encyclopedia of Tourism, co-edited by the SHTM's Dr Honggen Xiao and Professor Jafar Jafari, was a finalist in the UNWTO Award for Innovation in Research and Technology at the UNWTO Awards Ceremony held as part of the Madrid International Tourism Fair on 18 January. Dr Xiao attended the UNWTO Awards Forum two days earlier to share his expertise and experience.
Professor Rob Law and Dr Deniz Kucukusta received Third Place in the Journal Paper of the Year Award for their co-authored paper entitled "Analysis of the Perceived Value of Online Tourism Reviews: Influence of Readability and Reviewer Characteristics" at the 24th Annual ENTER Conference in Rome, Italy on 24-26 January 2017.
Dr Lorenzo Masiero was invited as a one-month Visiting Fellow under the Isambard Kingdom Brunel Bursary Scheme at the University of Portsmouth in the UK. The scheme encourages leading researchers to actively seek out top international academics in their discipline from across emerging economies with whom they would like to work on a collaborative research project.
Professor Rob Law received the Best Paper Award 2016 from the Journal of Hospitality & Tourism Management for his co-authored paper entitled "Motivating Frontline Employees: Role of Job Characteristics in Work and Life Satisfaction" at the 27th Council for Australasian Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) Annual Conference in Dunedin, New Zealand on 7-10 February 2017.
Colleagues at the SHTM including Dr Barry Mak, Dr Karin Weber, Dr Tony Tse, Professor Brian King and Dean Kaye Chon received the Maximum Staff Participation Award at PolyU's Outstanding Professional Services Award Presentation Ceremony 2016 on 14 February 2017 in recognition of the School's valuable contribution to consultancy work. Dr Tony Tse received the Highest Growth Consultant Award at the same ceremony.
Led by SHTM Instructor Mr Joey Wu, students of the Attractions and Visitor Management class recently took on the "Designing an onsite attraction for Ocean Park Halloween Fest 2017" project. Following a guest lecture by Ms Eva Au Yeung, Events and Entertainment Director at Ocean Park, and a tour of the relevant facilities at Halloween 2016, the students presented group proposals, with six selected as the best. They received their prizes of annual passes and admission tickets to Ocean Park at a presentation ceremony held on 17 February.
Dr Stephen Pratt received First Runner-up Best Paper Award for the year 2016 for his co-authored paper "Gross Happiness of a 'Tourism' Village in Fiji" from the Journal of Destination Marketing & Management.
Ms Kristina Braun, a final year student in the BSc(Hons) in Hotel Management programme, received the Outstanding Student Award of School and The Most Outstanding PolyU Student Award 2016 at PolyU's Outstanding Student Awards presentation ceremony on 21 February 2017. The former award was presented to Ms Braun by Professor Timothy Tong, PolyU President, and the latter award was presented by Mr Chan Tze-ching, Chairman of the PolyU Council. The Outstanding Student Awards are granted annually to full-time final-year students who excel in both academic and non-academic pursuits during their studies. Awardees are presented with prizes and their names are inscribed on a plaque on the PolyU campus.
Six SHTM faculty and staff members included Professor Cathy Hsu, Dr Wilco Chan, Dr Nelson Tsang, Dr Karin Weber, Ms Almen Yau and Ms Noriko Leung were honoured with Long Service Awards on 24 March 2017 by PolyU in appreciation of their loyal and dedicated service to the institution over the years.
