SHTM MicroMasters Programme Bridging Education Gap
In a fresh approach to bridging the knowledge gap between higher education and the workplace, the School teamed up with edX, the non-profit online learning platform founded by Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, to launch the first-ever MicroMasters in International Hospitality Management programme in January 2017. Featuring four courses, the programme is a credit bearing, accelerated Master's level offering that can stand alone or count towards entry to a traditional SHTM Master's degree.

On 18 January, International Hospitality Luxury Management was the first of the four courses launched. Supported by our industry partners including Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts, Cathay Pacific, Shangri-La Hotels and Resorts and The Peninsula Hong Kong, the course attracted a wide spectrum of learners from over 160 countries. In addition to lectures, two live sessions were hosted from the School, allowing learners to interact with faculty members and speakers in real time.

Hospitality and Tourism Technology and Innovation, the second course of the programme launched on 7 March, is featuring guest speakers from around the globe sharing their knowledge and perspectives. Professor Daniel Fesenmaier from the University of Florida led a case study of tourism design in week one, while Professor Ulrike Gretzel from the University of Southern California introduced theoretical perspectives on technology adoption and innovation diffusion for hospitality and tourism organisations in week two. Dr Dan Wang, the course instructor, also arranged interviews with Mr Patrick Sin, Director of Sales, Marketing and Revenue Management, and Mr Jason Pang, Director of Technology and Innovation, at Hotel ICON, who shared valuable industry insights. In the final week, Professor Dimitrios Buhalis from Bournemouth University, will give a lecture on technology development and the future of hospitality and tourism organisations.

The remaining two courses, to be launched later in the year, are:
  • HTM534x Managing Marketing in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry
    Instructor: Dr Tony Tse
    Start date: 9 June
  • HTM533x Managing Human Resources in the Hospitality and Tourism Industry
    Instructor: Dr Alice Hon
    Start date: 5 September
