Professor Brian King attended the Greater China Roundtable Meeting hosted by the Faculty of Hospitality and Tourism Management at the Macau University of Science and Technology in Macau on 21 October 2013 to discuss experiential learning in hospitality and tourism.
Professor Kaye Chon, Professor Haiyan Song, Professor Hanqin Qiu and Dr Mimi Li attended the 19th Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Houston, USA on 3-5 January 2014. Professor Song moderated a concurrent session on "Travel and Tourism". Professor Qiu moderated concurrent sessions on "Consumer Behavior" and "Hospitality and Tourism Education". She also presented papers entitled "An Exploratory Study of Demographic Influences on Cruisers' Motivation and Intention", "Budget Hotel: What Does the Chinese New Middle Class Care About?" and "Mainland Chinese Tourists' Travel Motivation to Taiwan: Developing Measurement Scales". Dr Li moderated concurrent sessions on "Travel and Tourism", "Finance & Economics and Management" and "Food Service".
Professor Brian King represented the School at "ACTE Asia Focuses on Corporate Social Responsibility", hosted by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives in Hong Kong on 11 January 2014. The event brought together a group of mentally challenged students interested in working in the hotel industry.
Professor Kaye Chon, Dr Sam Kim and Dr Qu Xiao attended the Asia-Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE) Annual Board Meeting in Kaohsiung, Taiwan on 17-18 January 2014. Dr Kim gave a presentation entitled "Internship: Example of SHTM at Hong Kong Polytechnic University".
Professor Brian King was invited to deliver a seminar in Hong Kong on "A Macro View of Global Tourism and How Global Marketing Trends are Shaping Hong Kong's Hotel and Tourism Industry" at an Industry Global Market Development Seminar hosted by the Hong Kong Hotels Association and The Hotel Controllers and Accountants Association of Hong Kong on 21 January 2014.
Professor Rob Law, Dr Norman Au and two Ph.D. students, Ms Liang Wang and Mr Sudipta Kiran Sarkar, attended the 21st Annual ENTER Conference in Dublin, Ireland on 21-24 January 2014. Professor Law presented a paper entitled "Sharing Internship Experience on the Internet: a Study of Tourism and Hotel Management College Students". Ms Wang and Professor Law co-presented a paper entitled "Website Development in Tourism and Hospitality: The Case of China". Mr Sarkar, Dr Au and Professor Law co-presented a paper entitled "Analysing Ecotourists' Satisfaction in Socialisation and Knowledge Sharing Intentions via Social Media".
Professor Kaye Chon gave a special presentation on the topic "Human Capital Building" at the 38th Annual General Meeting of the PATA Nepal Chapter. He also delivered speeches entitled "Leadership in Services Industry" and "Professional Development for Tourism and Hospitality Industry" at the PATA Youth Forum in Nepal on 29-30 January 2014.
Professor Haiyan Song, Professor Brian King, Professor Bob McKercher and Dr Wantanee Suntikul attended the 24th Annual CAUTHE Conference in Brisbane, Australia on 10-13 February 2014. Professor Song presented a paper entitled "Forecasting Demand for Tourism in Asia Pacific: A Discussion on Methodology". He was also a panel member of an interactive panel discussion session on "The Internationalisation of Tourism and Hospitality: Perspectives from Asia", and helped with the mentoring session at the Bill Faulkner Ph.D. and ECR Workshop. Professor King presented papers entitled "Volunteer Tourism Programs: A Stakeholder Matrix" and "The Visitor Experiences of International Students in Australia: A Cross-Cultural Comparison". Professor McKercher presented a paper entitled "Non-Travel: Real Barriers or Lack of Interest". Dr Suntikul presented a paper entitled "More Than Just Food Tourism: Thai Kitchen to the World".
Professor Kaye Chon gave a speech on "Human Capital Development for Hotel Industry" at the Asia Hotel Forum Annual Meeting in Shenzhen, China on 12-13 March 2014.
Professor Brian King was a keynote speaker at the 2014 International Symposia on Striving for Excellence in Higher Education - Innovative Thinking and Strategies to Forge Excellence in Tourism Industry in Taipei, Taiwan on 15 March 2014. He gave a speech on "Global Forces that are Shaping Asia's Hotel and Tourism Industry".
Professor Hanqin Qiu, Dr Basak Denizci Guillet, Dr Deniz Kucukusta and Dr Kam Hung attended the 2nd International Symposium on Education, Psychology, Society and Tourism in Tokyo, Japan on 28-30 March 2014. Professor Qiu and Dr Hung co-presented a paper entitled "Active Living in Later Life: An Overview of Aging Studies in Leisure, Hospitality and Tourism Journals". Dr Denizci Guillet and Dr Kucukusta co-presented a paper entitled "A Cross-cultural Comparison of Customers' Perceptions of Hotel Rate Fences".
