Dr Hanqin Zhang-Qiu and Professor Kaye Chon attended the 18th Annual Graduate Education and Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Seattle, USA on 3-5 January 2013. Dr Zhang-Qiu presented two papers entitled “Cultural and Sub-cultural Impact on Guests’ Experience and their Hotel Switching Behavior with Budget Hotels” and “A Review of China’s Outbound Tourism: Past, Present and Directions for Future Research”.
Professor Kaye Chon gave a seminar on “Self Development for Transformational Leadership” to 111 members of the senior management of Regal Hotels International on 17 January 2013.

Dr Qu Xiao and Professor Kaye Chon attended the Asia-Pacific Council on Hotel, Restaurant, and Institutional Education (APacCHRIE) Annual Board Meeting in Macau on 18-19 January 2013.
A number of SHTM staff members and students attended the 20th International Conference on Information Technology and Travel and Tourism ENTER 2013 in Innsbruck, Austria on 22-25 January 2013.
  • Professor Rob Law presented a paper entitled “Characteristics and Experience of Macau Visitors Booking Hotels Online: Leisure and Business Travellers Compared” and chaired the PhD Research Workshop.
  • Professor Law, Dr Norman Au and Mr Julian Ayeh co-presented a paper entitled “Towards an Understanding of Online Travellers’ Acceptance of Consumer-Generated Media for Travel Planning: Integrating Technology Acceptance and Source Credibility Factors”.
  • Professor Law, Mr Daniel Leung and Mr Lawrence Fong co-presented a paper entitled “Between Online and Offline Channels: Internship Information Search by Tourism and Hotel Management College Students”.
  • Professor Law, Mr Leung, Ms Shanshan Guo and Ms Liang Wang co-presented a paper entitled “A Citation Analysis of ENTER Proceedings in 2005 to 2012”.
  • Dr Dan Wang presented a paper entitled “Transforming the Travel Experience: The Use of Smartphones for Travel”.
Professor Brian King was invited to be a keynote speaker and spoke on the topic “Tourism Trends in Asia-Pacific: New Trends and Prospects” at the International Conference on Tourism Development 2013 in Penang, Malaysia on 4-5 February 2013.

Professor Haiyan Song and Professor Brian King attended the 23rd Annual CAUTHE conference in Christchurch, New Zealand on 11-14 February 2013. Professor Song presented a paper entitled “Forecasting Visitor Arrivals from the US to China: A Comparison of Model Performance”. Professor King presented two papers, entitled “Establishing a Community-Based Tourism Network in Timor-Leste: Opportunities and Prospects” and “International Visitor Encounters with Local Food: A Preliminary Conceptual Framework”. Professor King also gave a presentation at the Mid-Career Academic Workshop on “Promotions to Professor and Associate Professor”, and led the “Rest of the World” team against Australasia in the Great Debate.
Professor Kaye Chon delivered a seminar entitled “Asia’s Vision for Hospitality and Leadership” to 180 hotel general managers from the Guangzhou Hotels Association in Guangzhou on 22 February 2013.

Professor Chon delivered a special lecture entitled “Hospitality Research: Experiences from US and Asia” to students of the School of Hospitality Business at Michigan State University and met with postgraduate students from China on 20 March 2013. During his visit in the US, Professor Chon also attended a research round table for strategic management at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University on 21-22 March.
