The ACE Style Institute of Intimate Apparel (ASIIA) of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is the first of its kind in the Asia Pacific established in 2004 based on its many achievements in lingerie research and substantial support from the industry. It is committed to strengthen the tertiary education of intimate apparel as well as to develop competent professionals for the industry. The Institute organizes seminars, training and courses to the local and overseas lingerie industry as well as the former unique Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme in Intimate Apparel. Over the first three years, its graduates totaled over 90 were well-received by the industry. Since the 2008/09 academic year, it has become a government-funded articulation programme under the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) Scheme in Fashion and Textiles of PolyU. Over 30 intimate apparel specialism students graduate each year.

Parallel to PolyU’s mission, the overall philosophy of the Bachelor of Arts (Honours) programme in Fashion and Textiles with specialism in Intimate Apparel is “to learn and to apply for the benefit of mankind” with specific focus on the professional context of intimate apparel. The programme not only imparts professional knowledge and skills required for the industry, but also guides students to possess all-round personal qualities and to demonstrate a global outlook and enthusiastic interest in creative body fashion. The students graduating from this programme are expected to shoulder the responsibilities of creating new ideas and technologies, extend the frontiers of knowledge, support the further development of intimate fashion business and enhance the competitiveness of our society.

The industry has continued to provide ample support by offering scholarships and summer placement to outstanding students, as well as by donating intimate fashion trend books, magazines, samples, materials and accessories to promote active learning and first-hand experience. The programme also incorporates very rich contents of practical training in the form of study trip. The opportunities of practical training both in Hong Kong and abroad widens students’ horizons, enhances their leadership abilities, assertiveness, ability to think independently, analytically, critically and creatively, as well as improves their language and communication skills.
