Summary
The seminar traces the emergence and development of THE theory in strategic management - Resource-Based Theory (RBT). Since its inaugural publication in Journal of Management in 1991, the RBT framework, developed by Prof. Jay Barney, has been established as a theory in strategic management that explains why a firm's internal resources, capabilities, and core competencies lead to its competitive advantages. RBT has then been widely adopted by other business disciplines, and provoked scholarly development in related streams of theories such as knowledge-based view, dynamic capability view, and attention-based view. Latest development of RBT has seen the extension of theory in firms' development and deployment of A.I. capabilities. In this seminar, we will discuss the key premises, theoretical mechanisms, and applications of RBT in strategic management, entrepreneurship, and innovation. We will also evaluate the impacts and future research agenda of RBT.
