Biography

Dr Qiuyu (Luca) Lu is an Assistant Professor (Presidential Young Scholar) in the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and Director of the Interbeing Lab, which designs intelligence for mutualism between humans, nature, and machines. He holds a Ph.D. in Design and a B.Eng. in Mechanical Engineering from Tsinghua University, and has conducted research as a postdoctoral or visiting scholar at the MIT Media Lab, UC Berkeley, and Carnegie Mellon University. His award-winning work, published in leading HCI venues, has also been exhibited internationally at Ars Electronica and the Milan Triennale.

He is recruiting multiple PhD students and two postdocs. Research assistants and visiting students are also welcome. In addition to applicants with a design background, candidates from computer science, mechanical engineering, materials science, and related fields are strongly encouraged to apply. Positions may focus on one or more tracks:

  1. Experimental Track: Engineering and prototyping of novel interactive hardware systems.
  2. Computational Track: AI-aided design, computational design tools, and algorithm development.
  3. Design Track: Emphasis on understanding the design framework, user experience, stakeholders’ needs, etc. regarding the novel hardware and software technologies.

Interested candidates should send a CV and, optionally, a website/portfolio link to Dr Lu.
