Hong Kong Footholds in GBA: Campus-neighbouring Intergenerational Housing

The ‘Hong Kong Footholds in GBA: Campus-neighbouring Intergenerational Housing’ research project is a joint effort by a group of PolyU experts that outlines the challenges, methods, and recommendations for creating inclusive and self-sufficient communities for all age groups in the Greater Bay Area (GBA). It represents an important step in understanding the needs and preferences of Hong Kong residents considering intergenerational co-housing in other GBA cities, paving the way for future co-housing in the vibrant Greater Bay Area.

The findings help to envisage a gerontech-enhanced service strategy and scenario of a possible intergenerational housing models in the GBA. With earlier success of ‘Hong Kong Footholds in GBA: Campus-neighbouring Intergenerational Housing’ research project, CCG has further collaborated with SD Plus project team for working on ‘A Study of Age-friendly intergenerational communities for HK Elders in GBA’, regarded as a continuous phase of earlier research.

This second phase research aimed to evaluate design outcomes of earlier research by collecting older people’s feedback in Hong Kong to reveal the preferences of ‘design’ and ‘scheme’ of elder care service and assistive technology in the context of intergenerational co-living (housing) in the GBA. The project has generated quantitative empirical evidence and relevant knowledge to inform possible development of quality elderly-care services for future Hong Kong community settlement in the GBA.

The project final results have been successfully presented on May 2025, it will be taken as valuable foundations for CCG in developing their future co-living/co-housing initiatives for elderly in Hong Kong.
