Awards and Achievements

The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) is committed to driving innovation and interdisciplinary research by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) across diverse fields. Prof. YANG Hongxia, Associate Dean (Global Engagement) of the Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences, Professor of Department of Computing, and Executive Director of PolyU Academy for Artificial Intelligence, has been named in CoinDesk's “Top 50 Women in Web3 & AI” for her impactful contributions to pioneering cutting-edge technologies.

This inaugural list highlights 50 of the most influential women worldwide who are shaping the future of crypto and AI. Prof. YANG’s inclusion recognises her groundbreaking work in AI development, particularly her efforts to bridge advanced technology with practical applications across industries, from healthcare to finance.

Prof. YANG is a distinguished AI scientist with over 15 years of experience, specialising in large-scale machine learning, data mining, deep learning, and the practical deployment of large language model (LLM) systems in real-world settings. Throughout her illustrious career, she has developed ten significant algorithmic systems that have enhanced the operations of various enterprises.

Advancing AI in Healthcare and Beyond

As a strong advocate for decentralised AI, Prof. YANG has championed the "Model-over-Models" approach, which builds a foundational model from smaller, stackable domain-specific models. This solution, called InfiFusion, offers an efficient and scalable solution for high-performance LLM and aims to empower more industries with advanced AI capabilities. Currently, Prof. YANG and her team are developing foundation models in cutting-edge fields, including healthcare, manufacturing, energy, and finance.

Focused on bridging statistical innovation with healthcare and actuarial science, which is crucial for the future well-being of humanity, Prof. YANG has been invited to host a high-level course themed “AI and Statistics” at the prestigious Croucher Advanced Study Institutes.

Prof. YANG said, “By integrating statistical principles with the capabilities of generative AI, we aim to develop more robust models that can generate realistic data, improve predictive accuracy, and provide deeper insights into complex datasets.”

The objective of the Croucher Advanced Study Institutes is to explore the frontiers of generative AI and statistics is to delve into the intersection of these two dynamic fields, uncovering new methodologies and applications that can enhance data-driven decision-making and innovation.

CoinDesk's selection process involved a diverse panel of judges and over 300 nominations from around the world, emphasizing a balance of innovation, relevancy, and influence. The final list showcases leaders in crypto and AI with diverse areas of expertise, ranging from product development and business strategy to regulatory compliance and ethical frameworks.
