Biography
Professor Albert Chan is a Distinguished Research Professor at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU). He served as Dean of Students (2021–2025) and Head of the Department of Construction Management and Intelligence (formerly Building and Real Estate) (2015–2021). His leadership also includes roles as Associate/Interim Dean of the Faculty of Construction and Environment (2011–2014), Associate Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (2016–2025), Endowed Able Professor in Construction Health and Safety (2019–2025), and Chair Professor of Construction Engineering and Management (2015–2025).
He holds an MSc in Construction Management and Economics from the University of Aston and a PhD in Project Management from the former University of South Australia (now part of Adelaide University). Before joining PolyU in 1996, he was Senior Lecturer and Deputy Head at the University of South Australia. He has also held adjunct professorships at numerous institutions in Mainland China and internationally.
Professor Chan is a highly influential researcher specializing in project management, procurement, public‑private partnerships, and construction health and safety. He has published over 1,000 articles, including refereed journal papers, conference contributions, and consultancy reports. He has served on the Engineering Panel of Hong Kong’s Research Grants Council, the Built Environment Panel of FORMAS (Sweden), and the Faculty of Architecture at Delft University of Technology. He is a non‑official member of the Construction Industry Council (CIC). Since 2020, he has been ranked among the top 2% of scientists globally by Stanford University. On July 1, 2024, he received the Medal of Honour (M.H.) from the HKSAR Government for his contributions to construction policy research and professional development.
