The SHM Research Group is dedicated to both the fundamental and applied research in the field of structural health monitoring (SHM), ultrasonics, non-destructive evaluation (NDE), elastic wave propagation, smart materials and structures, sensor and sensor network, and advanced composite materials. It enjoys burgeoning growth since its establishment in 2007, consistently outputting high-quality publications in top-tier journals and securing research grants from various sources. In the pursuit for excellence, the Group is proactively applying research achievements to real-world engineering applications, and recent paradigms include the SHM technique/system developed for high-speed trains, space assets, and aircraft structures. The Group is well-equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, enabling innovative research and development of cutting-edge technologies. With recognition from peers and colleagues, the Group has networked with dozens of research groups at the frontier of today’s SHM technology, with solid partnership from Australia, China, Poland, Republic of Korea, the USA, the UK and many others.

Prof. Zhongqing Su is a full Professor affiliated with Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU), and the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of Ultrasonics (Elsevier). In PolyU, he leads a group dedicated to a wide array of research and development pertaining to guided-ultrasonic-wave-based structural health monitoring (SHM) and damage identification, with both fundamental investigations and real-world engineering applications.
He earned his Ph.D. from School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Mechatronic Engineering at The University of Sydney, Australia, with a full scholarship from the Australian Federal government. Immediately prior to this, he received his MSc and BEng from School of Aeronautical Science and Engineering at The Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics. All his degrees are in Aeronautics. Prof. Su joined PolyU in 2007 as an Assistant Professor, and was promoted to an Associate Professor (tenured) in 2011 under “University Fast-track Promotion Scheme” for outstanding young faculty members, and then a Full Professor in 2016. Before joining PolyU he was an “Australian Research Council – Australian Postdoctoral Fellow” (ARC-APF) at The University of Sydney in 2005-2006.
Apart from his main editorial appointment of the Editor-in-Chief of Ultrasonics, Prof. Su is also an Associate Editor for Structural Health Monitoring: An International Journal (SAGE), and ASME Journal of Nondestructive Evaluation, Diagnostics and Prognostics of Engineering Systems (ASME). He served Journal of Sound and Vibration (Elsevier) as a Subject Editor in 2016-2018. He also sits on the editorial boards of several journals in this field, including Structural Engineering and Mechanics: An International Journal, and Aerospace.
Prof. Su is the author/co-author of 2 research monographs, 6 edited books and international conference proceedings, 6 book chapters, and ~300 refereed papers including ~160 papers in top-tier SCI journals. His journal publications have been widely cited, leading to 7300+ citations and an H-index of 43 (as of July 2020).
Dr. Su has secured sizable research grants in the capacity of Principal Investigator from various government agencies (e.g., Hong Kong Research Grants Council (RGC), Hong Kong Innovation & Technology Commission (ITC), Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), Australian Research Council (ARC)), and industry (e.g., Airbus, Boeing Co., China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC), Ltd., High-speed Railways China).
Prof. Su was the General Chair of the 7th Asia-Pacific Workshop on Structural Health Monitoring which was successfully held in Hong Kong in 2018. He has been the Co-chair of SPIE Conference on Health Monitoring of Structural and Biological Systems (SPIE Conference Series on Smart Structures/NDE), and Sensors and Smart Structures Technologies for Civil, Mechanical, and Aerospace Systems (SPIE Conference Series on Smart Structures/NDE), since 2018. He is also an elected member of the Steering Committee of the European Workshop on SHM (EWSHM), the Scientific Committee of the Asia-Pacific Workshop on SHM (APWSHM), and a Board Member of International Congress on Ultrasonics (ICU). He is/has been a member of the international scientific, organizing or technical committees for numerous international conferences and workshops including SPIE Conference, ASME Conference, and International Conference Series on Structural Health Monitoring and Integrity Management. He was the Secretary General to the Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (HKSTAM) (2016-2018), and Australian Composite Structures Society (ACSS) (Sydney Chapter) (2004-2007). He has delivered some 80 plenary, keynote, and invited talks at international conferences and public seminars in different countries.
In recognition of his achievements in the field of SHM and scientific contributions to the SHM society, Prof. Su received the “Structural Health Monitoring - Person of the Year (SHM-POY) Award” in 2012. Other international or national acclamations and awards that he has received include “The Dragon-Star Innovation Award (1st Place)” from the European Commission in 2015, and a “Natural Science Award for Higher Education Outstanding Scientific Research Output” from The Ministry of Education, P. R. China in 2015. In PolyU, he was a recipient of the “President’s Award for Excellent Performance/Achievement in Research and Scholarly Activities (individual)” in 2011, “Faculty Award for Outstanding Performance/Achievement in Research (Individual)” in 2011, “Faculty of Engineering Research Grant Achievement Award (Individual)” in 2015 and 2017, and “Faculty Merit Award in Teaching” in 2010.

I am looking for self-motivated students who have strong passion and genuine wish to pursue his/her PhD degrees with me, in the general disciplines of structural health monitoring, NDE, ultrasonics, wave propagation, sensor technology, and nanocomposites. Full scholarships are available. In the meantime, I am also seeking mature researchers with sound knowledge and experience in SHM, NDE, ultrasonics, and sensing technology. Full PhD scholarship is available. Successful applicants are expected to have (i) a Bachelor’s degree or Master’s degree from recognized universities; (ii) sound knowledge in solid mechanics, or materials, or mechanical engineering; (iii) relevant research experience; and (iv) fulfilment of language requirements for those who do not have a degree for which English was the language of instruction (6.5+ in IELTS, or 80+ in TOEFL).
