HKIE Electrical Division Professional Short Course 2024: Empower a Smarter Living
Course title:
Direct Wireless Power Conversion – A New Generation of Power Conversion Technology
Course outline:
Wireless power transfer (WPT) has been becoming popular due to its electrocution-free, better convenience and higher flexibility. In particular, the wireless charging of electric vehicles has been actively investigated. Almost all WPT applications are based on electrochemical power conversion with the use of batteries for energy storage, which suffers from high cost and limited cycle life. To get rid of batteries for WPT applications, direct wireless power conversion (DWPC) becomes highly desirable. On top of battery-free, the electronic controller should also be avoided at the receiver side so that the device can be operated remotely in isolated environment and is totally maintenance-free. Thus, direct control can be fully handled at the transmitter side. Recently, this DWPC has been actively developed, with emphasis on wireless electromechanical power conversion, wireless electric lighting and wireless electric heating. The class will give an overview of key DWPC systems, namely the wireless motors, wireless lamps, and wireless heaters. Their operation principles and emerging applications will also be discussed.

Aims / Objectives:
This is to invite teachers and students of secondary schools to participate in the captioned events.
Details:
This series of lectures is co-organised by the Joseph Needham Foundation for Science and Civilisation (JNFSC), the Education Bureau, the Hong Kong Academy of Sciences and the Hong Kong Science Museum, with the aims to promote Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics (STEAM) education, and to enable students and the public to learn more about the recent development of some STEAM-related topics (including sustainable agricultural technology, computer chips technology, medical ultrasound technology, biomedical engineering, novel electric vehicle technology, psychiatric related technology applications, novel passive cooling technology), as well as to recognise the challenges and opportunities of innovation and entrepreneurship in Hong Kong.
Date and Time:
6 December 2023 (Wednesday)
3:00 - 4:15 p.m.
Venue:
Science Museum, Hong Kong
Topic and Synopsis of Lecture:
Challenges and Opportunities of Novel Electric Vehicle Technologies
With ever increasing concerns on environment issues (e.g. Global Warming), the development of more environmental friendly electric vehicles (EVs) is taking on an accelerated pace. Different kinds of EV (including the battery, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and fuel-cell) have their features, shortcomings and potentials. This lecture will discuss key technologies and some innovative EV technological challenges (including the in-wheel motors and wireless charging). In addition, some novel EV development and opportunities, including the vehicle-to-grid (V2G) service and vehicular energy network, will also be discussed.
