To facilitate major government initiatives, electric vehicles (EVs) are being strategically developed for transportation electrification in a global context, which can improve environmental deterioration, increase the penetration of renewable energy and stabilize the power system. More R&D work is urgently desired to achieve technical breakthroughs in these aspects.

It is an opportune time to capitalize on the massive opportunities in EV research and education, and address pressing challenges related to EVs. Therefore, the establishment of a university-level Research Centre for Electric Vehicles (RCEV) in PolyU is timely and highly desirable. Led by world-class EV experts, the RCEV will establish a state-of-the-art R&D platform for EV research and development. It will actively conduct various R&D activities to address the technical challenges of modern EVs as well as provide technological solutions and significant references for achieving higher efficiency, higher security, higher reliability and higher intelligence.

The RCEV will transfer the technologies developed to industry, especially in Hong Kong, China and the world at large, helping them to capitalize on massive opportunities related to EVs worldwide. The technology transfer and demonstration activities will also greatly support the promotion of electric transportation and the realization of carbon neutrality for many countries and cities including Hong Kong. The RCEV will establish international academia-industry collaborations sustainably and consolidate the leading position of PolyU's EV technologies in Hong Kong. It will also attract and nourish numerous world-class talents of scholars and leaders. The relevant R&D activities can foster these talents to lead the sustainable development of EV technologies in universities, institutes and industries globally. Finally, the RCEV entre will create a significant impact on our society, environment and economy.

 

The RCEV strives to conduct novel and pioneering research activities as well as transfer knowledge and technology to industry for the benefit of Hong Kong, the Greater Bay Area in China, and the world at large.

Align with PolyU

To align with PolyU’s mission of pursuing impactful research with critical thinkers, effective communicators and innovative problem solvers, the establishment of this Research Centre will serve as an internationally recognized platform to attract global talents in developing cutting-edge electric vehicle technologies and transfer them to solve challenges and problems faced by electric vehicle industries. In addition, an ecosystem for innovation, research, development, demonstration and commercialization of electric vehicle technologies could be built to further develop state-of-the-art research facilities. We also aim to further strengthen the unique and reputable position of PolyU’s electric transportation engineering research in Hong Kong, attracting first-class students and researchers and nurturing them to be leading experts in this field.


Apart from the above, we also look for further advancement in the following:

  • Provide opportunities for PolyU faculty to attract substantial research funding and initiate extensive collaborations with local industries;
  • Transfer the technology developed to industry, especially in the Greater Bay Area in China, and help industries capture opportunities related to the development of modern electric vehicle technologies worldwide;
  • Foster sustainable international academia-industry collaborations.
