Lay Members (Members who are not employees or students of the University or public officers)

Of the 17 Lay Members of the Council, nine are appointed by the Chief Executive of the HKSAR and eight are appointed by the Council.   The Chief Executive shall also appoint the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of the Council as well as the Treasurer of the University from among the Lay Members.  

The Council has established the Council Membership Nominations Committee to help identify and recommend appointments/re-appointments under the membership category “eight Lay Members to be appointed by the Council”. The identification of candidates shall be made with regard to a skills template which was prepared and is updated from time to time in accordance with the professional expertise and experience required by the University for its sustainable development.

Elected Staff Members

The Council has three Elected Staff Members, of whom two are to be elected by and from the full-time staff and one is to be elected by and from the Senate. The elections are conducted in accordance with the Statute Governing the Holding and Conduct of Election of Staff Members of Council established by the Council. The President is delegated with the authority by the Council to formally appoint the three Staff Members who are elected following this Statute.

Elected Student Members

The Council has two Student Members, of whom one is to be elected by and from the full-time undergraduate and sub-degree students and the other is to be elected by and from the full-time postgraduate students. The elections are conducted in accordance with the Statute Governing the Holding and Conduct of Election of Student Members of Council established by the Council.   The President is delegated with the authority by the Council to formally appoint the two Student Members elected following this Statute.

A Member from the Alumni who is not an employee of the University

The Member from the alumni is to be nominated by the Federation of PolyU Alumni Associations and appointed by the Council.

Ex-officio Members

The President and the Deputy President of the University are ex-officio members of the Council.
