Smart sensors can detect a bridge%u2019s response to multiple environmental and climatic factors such as temperature, wind speed, seismic movements, and vehicular loads. The data from the sensors can be processed and analysed in a fraction of a second, allowing engineers to accurately assess the structural condition and material degradation of a bridge. In contrast, traditional approaches rely on rough estimates from numerical models based on assumptions, simple theoretical formulae or small-scale laboratory tests that may differ significantly from real-life situations.
