Ms. Melissa Kaye Pang delivered a talk entitled “Under Basic Law – How Hong Kong’s Common Law System Develops & Maintains its Strength?” on 18 January 2023.

Ms. Pang is qualified to practice as a solicitor in Hong Kong, being a Partner of Pang & Associates and the President of LAWASIA. Ms. Pang was the first female President of the Law Society of Hong Kong from 2018 to 2021. She is also a Notary Public, Civil Celebrant, accredited mediator and China-Appointed Attesting Officer. Enthusiastic about community affairs, she is currently the Chairman of the Family Council, the Agency for Volunteer Service, the Hong Kong Press Council and the Independent Review Committee of Po Leung Kuk.

The HKSAR legal system is based on the common law system‚ which is different from that of Mainland China. In this talk, Ms. Pang discussed how the common law system in Hong Kong operates, develops and maintains its strength over time within the framework of the Basic Law, which is often regarded as a “mini-constitution” of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR)‚ setting out the country’s basic policies regarding HKSAR.
