Summary
Abstract
Professor Greenfield will begin with a theory of social change, cultural evolution, and human development and then apply it to research in the United States and China. It is noted that long-term patterns in both countries are the same; however, in China social change has of course been much more rapid. In both countries, social shifts - such as urbanization - have led to greater individualism over time in two facets of human development - child behavior and parent socialization. She will also present an example from the Great Recession to show that her theory can account for bidirectional social change.
