The Department of Land Surveying and Geospatial Science (LSGS) at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) recently hosted its Career Talk 2026 to provide students with practical insights into the public surveying and geo-informatics sectors. The event was attended by undergraduate and master’s degree students seeking information on future employment pathways and training opportunities within the HKSAR Government.
The session featured a presentation by Ms. Helen Pui Ying TUNG, Assistant Land Surveyor/Training (Asst. LS/Tr) from the SMO Training School of the Lands Department. Ms. TUNG shared information regarding the daily operations of government surveying teams, outlined public service career progression, and explained the recruitment criteria. The talk aimed to help students understand the application processes and training schemes available for careers in land surveying, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and smart city development.
The presentation was followed by an exceptionally vibrant Q&A session. Participating students actively drove the conversation, raising targeted questions regarding professional licensing timelines, the specific core competencies expected during government interviews, and the daily fieldwork challenges in urban mapping. Ms. TUNG provided detailed, practical advice, fostering a dynamic and invaluable dialogue that gave students clear clarity on their next professional steps.
By connecting academic studies with current public sector requirements, the Career Talk supported LSGS’s ongoing efforts to assist graduates with career planning and prepare them for professional roles in Hong Kong’s geospatial and infrastructure fields.
