Sr Prof. Charles Man Sing WONG, Associate Dean (Teaching & Global Engagement) of the Faculty of Construction and Environment (FCE), Associate Director of the Research Institute for Sustainable Urban Development (RISUD), and Professor of the Department of Land Surveying and Geospatial Science (LSGS), recently shared his team’s innovative application of AI sensors for real-time tree monitoring at an international forestry symposium in Beijing.
To tackle the challenges of urban forestry management, the research team installed smart sensors on over 8,000 trees across Hong Kong. Utilizing artificial intelligence, the system continuously monitors tree stability and sends immediate risk alerts to maintenance personnel, significantly enhancing public safety and disaster prevention.
Furthermore, Sr Prof. WONG’s team successfully applied AI algorithms to quantify carbon sequestration across 51 local tree species. This data-driven research provides valuable scientific evidence to assist the Government in strategic urban greening selections and sustainable planning.
