Summary
The Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) is a well-established component and platform. It was created to work with the Scientific Services of the IAG for advancing our understanding of the dynamic Earth system by quantifying our planet’s changes in space and time. All in all, GGOS is the primary contribution of geodesy to global Earth observation. In the presentation, GGOS is introduced and discussed with respect to rigorous integration of all kinds observations and models involved – based on the three-pillars model of geodesy and addressing the interfaces and background constraints of geodetic Earth observations. Several aspects will be treated in more detail such as the provision of Essential Geodetic Variables (EGV), the use and application of AI techniques, the role of uncertainty quantification, and the relation between global and regional scale Earth observation. The main goal of the talk is to raise awareness for the state, constraints and perspectives of global Earth observations, and for respective research opportunities.

Hansjörg Kutterer received the Dipl.-Ing., Dr.-Ing., and Dr.-Ing. habil. degrees from Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1990, 1993, and 2001, respectively. He has been a University Professor of Geodetic Earth System Science at KIT since 2018. From 2004 to 2011, he was a University Professor at Leibniz University Hannover, Hanover, Germany. From 2011 to 2018, he was the Director General of the Federal Agency of Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), Frankfurt, Germany. He has been holding various high-level positions in national and international administrative and scientific committees. His research interests refer to integrated Earth observation, satellite-based geodetic observation techniques and systems, such as GNSS and InSAR, to geodetic modeling and data analysis including uncertainty assessment, and their relation to Earth system research. At present, Hansjörg Kutterer is Assistant Editor-in-Chief of Journal of Geodesy, chair of GGOS D-A-CH, and president of the German Geodetic Commission (DGK).
