Summary
Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been around for nearly 60 years and have undergone several evolutionary steps. This seminar explains these evolutions and highlights their major characteristics and implications for Geo-Information Science. Central concepts of spatial modeling, the mathematical foundation for topology in GIS, and an outlook into the future of GIS are given.
Finally, some examples of joint projects and cooperation in the field of Chinese earth observation systems will be presented.
Keynote Speaker
Prof. Wolfgang Kainz is an emeritus professor of cartography and geo-information science of the University of Vienna, Austria, and a visiting professor at Wuhan University, China. He holds a graduate degree in technical mathematics and a PhD in geo-information science from the Graz University of Technology, Austria. Prof. Kainz has more than 40 years of experience in education, research, and consulting in the field of geographic information science. In his research he focuses on the theoretical issues of GIS related to spatiotemporal modeling, uncertainty, and topology. He served in various functions in international scientific societies, namely the International Cartographic Association (ICA) and the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ISPRS). Currently, he is the president of the Austrian Cartographic Commission and the editor-in-chief of the ISPRS International Journal of GeoInformation. In 2020 he received the Chinese Government Friendship Award and the ISPRS Wang Zhizhuo Award.
