The Hong Kong Palace Museum - The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Joint Chinese Textile Centre

Project Fund Scheme

The Hong Kong Palace Museum - The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Joint Chinese Textile Centre (JCTC) was established in December 2024. Its inspiration comes from the generous donation of Chris Hall to the Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) of more than 3,000 pieces of Chinese silk textiles dating from the Warring States period (sixth to third centuries BCE) to the contemporary era. Selected items from the collection have been on display since October 2025 in Gallery 6 of HKPM as part of the exhibition “A History of China in Silk.” Further information is available here.

Focusing on (but not limited to) the Chris Hall Collection, the JCTC conducts and supports research, education, and public outreach across a wide range of academic fields. They include the science of Chinese silk, craftsmanship and artistic styles, conservation and restoration, social theory, textile history, the Silk Road, design innovation, and digital applications.

The JCTC welcomes proposals for projects that align with any of the research directions outlined above as long as they meet these criteria:

  1. The project must be led by PolyU staff members (including visiting scholars, postdoctoral fellows, or other affiliated personnel).
  2. All projects must be completed by 31 December 2027 regardless of their start date.
  3. The maximum funding amount is HKD 300,000.
  4. The project should deliver clearly defined research outputs, such as monographs, journal articles, courses, or design works.
  5. The application materials should not exceed four A4 pages.

Applications must be submitted by 30 January 2026. The review process will be completed by 28 February 2026.
